English Contest Week – May 20-24

Activities:  Practice for Readers Theater (the whole class will participate) 

A.  Language Arts:     

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING UNIT ON ANIMAL HABITATS AND ADAPTATION

Our students have started to set up their animals in their respective habitats in the 5Yellow classroom.  Everyone is excited about this project.  Taking care of real -live animals would give our students the chance to learn about the animals that they're taking care of, learn responsibility and teamwork, among many other things.

 The lessons are going to be especially designed for this unit.  The reading book, My Sidewalk, will only be used as a supplementary reading book.  

MATERIALS AND LESSONS:

1.  READINGS – Readings pertaining to the animals the class is learning will be provided on handouts to the students. 

Students must keep all the reading handouts of the unit as they are included in the final exam on June 14.

Reading Marathon Part 1 - Starts February 25 - April 02 (approximately 5 weeks)
               1.  Students must read for a total of 1,000 minutes (at 200 minutes per week) during the 5 week period.
               2.  Reading minutes will be checked weekly.  Students should try to reach 200 minutes of reading every week to qualify for the "gold medal" award.
               3.  Each reading entry in the reading passport must have an accompanying SRR.
               4.  Students that reaches 1,000 minutes of reading by April 02 will be invited to an "Ice Cream" Party.

Reading Rate/Fluency/Comprehension Testing - 5 Yellow students' reading rate, fluency
and comprehension skills are going to be assessed at the beginning of the semester.  The second assessment will be done after the Reading Marathon Part 1.

For homework:  students should practice on Spelling City; correct the WS workbook; prepare for a spelling/vocabulary quiz on Thursday.
  • Vocabulary - PB p47; review all vocabulary from the 3 units;  update vocabulary notebook by writing down all the definitions in English and the Chinese translation of the word.
For homework:  students should practice on Spelling City and use the vocabulary words in sentences correctly; complete and study the new vocabulary on PB p49
