READING MARATHON

GRADE 5 SEMESTER 2
READING OLYMPICS, PART 1


Starts February 25 - April 02 (approximately 5 weeks)
               1.  Students must read for a total of 1,000 minutes (at 200 minutes per week) during the 5 week period.
               2.  Reading minutes will be checked every Tuesday.  Students should reach 200 minutes of reading every week.   
               3. Students should read a many genres as possible.
               4.  Each reading entry in the reading passport must have an accompanying SRR.  Each question on the SRR must have at least 2 meaningful sentences.
               5.  What awaits our marathon participants?
a.  Students that reach 1,000 minutes of reading by April 02 will be invited to an "Ice Cream" Party. 
b.  Books will be awarded to the top 3 highest reading time and prizes for those who reach at least 1,200 minutes.










READING OLYMPICS 3

OBJECTIVES:
1.  To develop the love and habit of reading.
2.  To aid in the development of English skills such as vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar awareness and sentence patterns, among many other benefits that reading brings. 

GUIDELINES:
1. START of Reading Olympics 3:   November 19- December 28, 2012

2. READING TIME REQUIRED:  Every student must read for at least 150 minutes per week or 25 minutes per day.  

Reading Olympics 3 runs through the 6 weeks of Cycle 3.

6 weeks x 150 minutes = at least 900 minutes is the required reading minutes for Reading Olympics 3.

3.  READING MATERIALS: Any English book that is not part of the English lessons.

4. READINGS MUST BE RECORDED ON THE READING PASSPORT. A parent must sign all entries to be counted. 

Parents - please make sure your child is REALLY reading so that he/she gets the full benefits and achieve the objectives of the reading program.

4.  AWARDS:
a)     900-1000 READING MINUTES  - a recognition certificate and a movie pass
b)     1000-1200 READING MINUTES- a recognition certificate, a movie pass and popcorn.
c)     ABOVE 1,200 MINUTES OF READING - a recognition certificate, a movie pass, popcorn AND a book.
